The Cognition Education Trust is incorporated under the Charitable Trusts Act (1957), is set up to provide benefits to schools, firstly in the area from Warkworth to Mercer, and elsewhere in New Zealand.

Purpose: Consistent with our Trust Deed and in the interest of our beneficiaries, schools, the purpose of Cognition Education Trust is: to raise the educational expectations and increase the life chances for all New Zealand students, with a particular focus on improving education for our beneficiaries in the greater Auckland area.

Mission statement: We believe all children and young people are entitled to high expectations of the education system and to an education which maximizes their potential. We will work with the sector to help create an education system which is responsive to individual learners’ needs and aspirations and thereby contributes to New Zealand’s social and economic health. The Cognition Institute is the principal mechanism for the Trust to deliver its philanthropy.

Keith Goodall CA, CMA, FCISalt

Keith is Chair of the Cognition Education Trust and has served as a director of MultiServe since its inception 22 years ago.

A Chartered Accountant with over 30 years’ experience, he is a director of Keith Goodall & Associates (KGA Ltd), a specialist accounting practice.

Keith is a director of substantial companies in the health, education, telecommunications, energy and distribution companies, and was till recently deputy chairman of a top 200 Australian listed company. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Directors.

Keith has authored and presented continuing education courses for The Institute of Chartered Accountants of New Zealand and also held a government board appointment to a State Owned Enterprise.  


Candis Craven
MA Hons, Grad. Dip. Business, Dip Ed, ONZMalt

Candis brings extensive experience to her role as Deputy Chair of Cognition Education Trust.

A member of the New Zealand Institute of Directors, her current directorships include Auckland Council Investments Ltd, the Auckland Regional Amenities Funding Board, Auckland Art Fair Ltd and the Royal New Zealand Ballet.

She has previously been Chair of the Investment Committee at Public Trust, and member of Occupational Therapy Board of NZ and of the ASB Community Trust Board. Candis was made an Officer of the Order of New Zealand (ONZM) in 2001 for her services to health education.

argaret Bendall BA (Hons); Diploma in Teaching, CNZM, JPalt

A former principal of Epsom Girls Grammar School and Board Member of the New Zealand 

Qualifications Authority for several terms, since 2005 Margaret has held a number of leadership and management roles in the Faculty of Education at the University of Auckland.

Much of Margaret's recent work has been focused on the implementation of the New Zealand Curriculum (2007), and professional learning for principals and other school leaders.

Margaret's professional career has been marked by her leading contributions to curriculum design, particularly in the field of English, and qualifications reform. 

She has a long-standing commitment to the on-going development of curriculum, pedagogy and qualification systems that support young people to succeed at school, and to develop capabilities for their on-going learning beyond school.

In 2005, Margaret was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (CNZM) for her services to education.


John Hattie 
BA, DipEd, MA(Hons), PGDipArts, PhD,  ONZMalt

John is currently Director of the Research Institute at the University of Melbourne’s Graduate School of Education, and Honorary Professor at the University of Auckland.

An outstanding scholar and researcher, acclaimed internationally as an authority on teaching and assessment, John has  authored or co-authored 12 books, the most recent being Visible Learning, and more than 500 papers.

He was Director of the Visible Learning Lab and eAsTTle, an assessment tool for teaching and learning literacy and numeracy.

He has been both Professor and Chair of Educational Research Methodology at the University of North Carolina in Greensboro.  He has also held senior positions at the University of Western Australia in Perth, and the University of New England.

John was made an Officer of the Order of New Zealand (ONZM) in 2011 for his services to education.



Cognition Education Trustees Report:

Cognition Education Trustees met with representatives of their beneficiaries recently to report on its philanthropy and discuss activities for next year. As an independent philanthropic organisation, the Trust’s purpose is to raise the educational expectations and increase the life chances of all New Zealand students, with a particular focus on improving education for beneficiaries in the greater Auckland area. The Cognition Education Trust wholly owns Cognition Education Ltd, a leading education consultancy supporting the development and reform of education systems worldwide. The purpose of the company is to generate profits for the Trust to distribute in the interests of its beneficiaries.
